Westville – Purdue University North Central will join colleges and universities across the country in observing Campus Sustainability Day on Tuesday, Oct. 21. The day will feature a discussion group, virtual poster session and a web cast that will promote and encourage programs that reduce the university's impact on the environment and promoting sustainability.
The event is open to all students, college and university administrators, sustainability coordinators, faculty, college and university planners and all others who are interested in, or already working with sustainability initiatives in higher education.
All activities will take place in the Library-Student-Faculty Building Assembly Hall, Room 02 on campus.
Events will include:
10:30 to 11 a.m. – A virtual poster session
11 a.m. to noon - Panel discussion
Noon to 1:30 p.m. - Webcast with the “N.Y. Times”
1:30 to 2:30 p.m. – Open Discussion
The webcast, "Sustainability Strategies for Vibrant Campus Communities" explores how hundreds of campuses across North America are reducing their environmental impact in their operations, developing curricula and educational experiences that address climate disruption and incorporate the principles of sustainability into their strategic plans and core missions.
Participants will learn how these institutions are finding opportunities in the wake of budget cuts and providing the appropriate campus infrastructure and knowledge on how to finance, plan, operate and manage low carbon, energy efficient campuses. It will also explain how this supports broader community, regional, and national initiatives.
Discussions will touch on how universities can engage with their local community on sustainability, how and why institutions should support student activism for fiscal, social, and ecological benefits, federal policy on sustainability and the implications for higher education and identify financing mechanisms.
