Purdue North Central Welcomes New Faculty Members
WESTVILLE – Purdue University North Central welcomes 15 new faculty members for the 2005 – 2006 academic year.
They are:
Edward “Ted” Armstrong, assistant professor of English. He received his Ph.D. in English from The Pennsylvania State University with specialization in Renaissance rhetoric, rhetorical theory, the history of rhetoric and rhetoric and composition. He joins PNC from the University of Arkansas where he served as assistant professor of English.
Yeou-Lan Chen, professor and chair of Nursing. Chen received her Ph.D. in Nursing from the University of Utah. Among her specialties are nursing theory, community health, gerontological nursing, women’s health and traditional Chinese medicine. She has earned a variety of health-related grants for sponsored research and has authored a number of books and articles in professional journals. Her current research project, “Qualitative Research in Nursing,” is scheduled for publication as a monograph in 2006.
Carin Chuang, assistant professor of Computer Technology. She earned an M.S. in Hospitality Information Systems and an M.S. in Urban Studies, both from Michigan State University. Chuang formerly was employed at the Perkins and Will Architecture firm in Chicago where she was webmaster and database administrator. She holds numerous certifications with Microsoft and Sun MicroSystems.
Cheryl DeLeon, visiting assistant professor of Psychology. Having earned her Ph.D. in Life-Span Development from West Virginia University, DeLeon’s research interests explore night awakening patterns in infants. She most recently taught at Indiana University South Bend.
Thomas Dobrowski, assistant professor of Building Construction Management Technology, holds an M.B.A. from Purdue University. He was formerly a guest lecturer at Purdue University Calumet and served as assistant division manager with DLZ Industrial, LLC.
Gayla Domke, assistant professor of Mathematics. She received her Ph.D. in mathematics from Clemson University with an emphasis on graph theory. The author of more than two dozen publications in a variety of scholarly journals, Domke previously taught at Georgia State University and most recently, Indiana University Northwest.
Ozcan Gulacar, visiting assistant professor of Chemistry. A doctoral candidate in science education at Western Michigan University, Gulacar been employed there as a teaching assistant.
Sharron Jenkins, visiting assistant professor of Chemistry. The author of the study “African American Health Disparities,” she earned her Ph.D. in Chemistry from Loyola University in Chicago, with emphasis on biophysical chemistry. She was formerly a faculty member at Columbia College in Chicago.
Michele Livojevic-Davis, visiting assistant professor of Sociology. She received her Ph.D. in Sociology from McGill University.
Nancy Marthakis, assistant professor of Microbiology. Marthakis holds a D.O. from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine. She comes to PNC from Governor’s State University in Illinois.
Mario Ortiz, assistant professor of Nursing. He was previously responsible for managing a trauma health care center at the Oregon Health & Science University Hospital. He earned a Ph.D. in Nursing from Loyola University in Chicago and is licensed by both the Indiana and Oregon State Boards of Nursing.
William Stockdale, visiting instructor of Mathematics/Statistics. Having received an M.A. in mathematics and an M.S. in secondary education from Purdue University Calumet, he taught as a part-time faculty member at Purdue Calumet for 27 years.
Karen Stringer, visiting assistant professor of Nursing. She holds an M.S.N. degree from Valparaiso University with a specialization in Community Health Nursing and is a Certified Diabetes Educator. She comes to PNC from Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in South Bend.
Jonathan Swarts, assistant professor of Political Science, received a Ph.D. in Political Science from The Ohio State University where he was a Presidential Fellow. Most recently, he has been a part-time lecturer at Purdue North Central and Indiana University South Bend.
Daniel Wilbur, assistant professor of Communication, will receive his Ph.D. from Purdue University in August 2005, with a focus on organizational and health communication.

Jennifer Carlberg, visiting instructor of biology, has been appointed continuing lecturer of Biology (Laboratory).
Debra DeFoor, visiting assistant professor of Education, has been appointed continuing lecturer of Education.
Kent Lange, visiting assistant professor of biology, has been appointed continuing lecturer of Biology.
Steven “Kim” Scipes, visiting assistant professor of sociology, has been appointed assistant professor of Sociology.
Beth Starnes, clinical assistant professor of nursing, has been appointed assistant professor of Nursing.
