PNC, Libraries to Host “Greenberg” Film Screenings
WESTVILLE – Public showings of the film "Greenberg” will be offered through a collaboration among the Purdue University North Central Odyssey 2010 - 2011 Arts and Cultural Events Series, LaPorte County Public Library and Michigan City Public Library. The showings are free and open to the public.
The film will be shown on Thursday, Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. at PNC in the Library-Student-Faculty Building Assembly Hall, Room 02; Sunday, Sept. 19 at 2 p.m. at the Michigan City Public Library, 100 E. Fourth St., Michigan City and Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. in LaPorte Library, 904 Indiana Ave. The film is rated R for some strong sexuality, drug use and language.
“Greenberg” is based on a story by actress Jennifer Jason Leigh and is directed by Noah Baumbach. The movie tells the story of Roger Greenberg (played by Ben Stiller), who travels from New York to California to watch his brother's house. The film centers on the antihero Greenberg's relationship with Florence, his brother's assistant, his association with a former bandmate and his relationship with his former fiancée, played by Jason Leigh. Greenberg carries with him a mid-life crisis and narcissistic personality and he can be thoughtless and miserable.
But “The New York Times” says, “Although Roger Greenberg is a world-class narcissist, ‘Greenberg' is not all about him.” The paper calls this the “funniest and saddest movie Baumbach has made and the riskiest.”
Roger Ebert gave the film three and-a-half stars. He states, “What Stiller does with the role is fascinating. We can't stand Greenberg, but we begin to care about him.”
