PNC American Sign Language Club Elects Officers

Westville – The Purdue University North Central American Sign Language (ASL) Club has elected its officers for the 2011-2012 academic year.

They are: Allison Frye and Ashley Germain, co-presidents; Patricia Riley-Churilla, vice president; Holly Swallow, historian and Daffnie Pavlench-Barnes, secretary-treasurer.

The ASL Club hosts a number of events throughout the year for students and the community who use ASL or are interested in learning the language. It has been hosting ASL Coffeehouses for six years, which average about 80 in attendance. Oftentimes, customers who happen to be in the cafes when the silent coffees are held enjoy the event, enjoy themselves so much that they seek out further information about the club, friend it on Facebook and continue to attend the ASL coffees.

The club has also hosted silent dinners in the community, silent teas on campus and game nights for children and families. It has raised funds to send a deserving child to Indiana children's Deaf Camp this summer..

To learn more about the ASL Club and its activities email Karen Donah, continuing lecturer and coordinator of American Sign Language, at kdonah@pnc.edu or visit the club at www.aslclub.info.
