PNC 2005 Science Fair Winners

WESTVILLE – Top honors in the 52nd annual Northwestern Indiana Science and Engineering Fair, held Saturday, March 19, at Purdue University North Central went to Ashlee Brewer, a senior at New Prairie High School and Julie Loza, a sophomore at Kouts High School.

As winners of the Purdue University North Central Chancellor's Awards, they each received cash awards of $150, along with all-expense-paid trips to the 56th International Science and Engineering Fair, May 8 – 14 in Phoenix, Ariz. They also will compete in the Hoosier Science and Engineering Fair, April 8, in Indianapolis. Brewer's teacher, Kimberly Holifield, and Loza's teacher, Andrea Clinkenbeard, will also receive expense-paid trips to the Hoosier and International fairs.
The runner-up and winner of the Purdue University North Central Award was Anthony Pearce, a junior at New Prairie High School.

The fair attracted more than 100 students from schools throughout Porter and LaPorte counties.

Chancellor's Award winner Brewer's project, “Great Musicians, Great Instruments: An Understanding of Sound Quality Using an Analytical Approach,” studied sound waves and how the combination of different frequencies combine to allow the human ear to distinguish the sound of a clarinet from the sound of a trumpet.

Loza's Chancellor's Award winning project, “Can Lasers Be Used to Measure Blood Glucose Levels?” worked to establish if blood glucose levels could be measured by a laser used outside of the body, with the laser passing through a small, thin area of skin, such as that between the thumb and forefinger.

Pearce, the winner of the Purdue University North Central Award, presented the project, “An Analytical Investigation of Driving Behavior.” The purpose of his study was to analytically show that a number of factors play a role in driving behavior such as acceleration, deceleration and passive or aggressive behavior. His data was used to identify whether there is a difference in driving skill between age groups if the skill level is random.

The PNC Biology Chemistry Award for the top Junior Division project in the Biological and Life Sciences went to Michelle Gottschlich, an eighth grade student at Willowcreek Middle School in Portage. As winner, she will also attend the Hoosier Science and Engineering Fair, April 8, in Indianapolis. Her winning project was, “Does the Location of a Body of Water Affect its Phosphorus Level?” She tested the phosphorus levels of local streams, rivers, ponds and lakes and then related the phosphorus level to the nearest agricultural area, working to prove her hypothesis that the bodies of waters nearest an agricultural area will have the highest phosphorus level.
The award for the top junior division project in Physical Sciences, Mathematics and Computers was presented to Evan Dominguez, a seventh grade student at Nativity of Our Savior in Portage. He will also attend the Hoosier Science and Engineering Fair, April 8, in Indianapolis.

His project, “Music in Numbers” analyzed which frequency produces the most complex harmonogram (an instrument drawing of curves that represent vibrations), so that he could determine whether the higher frequencies produced the most complex patterns.
